During his time at UNICEF, he supported several countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas in policy formulation, strategic planning and the design, implementation, review, and evaluation of RMNCAH, HIV, Malaria, Polio, Nutrition and WASH programs.

He led UNICEF’s health response to the Ebola outbreaks in Liberia (2014–2015) and DRC (2018), the UNICEF Regional Polio Eradication Team (2016-2019) and the UN Interagency RMNCH Partnership (2017-2018) for West and Central Africa.

He pioneered various initiatives including the Global PMTCT Forum, the Abuja Call to eliminate mother-to-child transmission, the Global PMTCT Report,

the District Health Systems Strengthening (DHSS), the Child-friendly Communities (CFC) and the Community Register with its electronic version.

Before joining the United Nations, Dr Ngongo had worked for 13 years as a clinician and hospital director in Tsabong and Masunga in Botswana, in Kabinda, Kalonda-est and Lubao in DRC, and in Petauke in Zambia;

a district medical officer in Francistown in Botswana and Kalonda-est and Lubao in DRC, and the Head of the National Program on the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV in Botswana. He rolled out the Botswana National PMTCT program from two pilot sites in Gaborone and Francistown to full national scale up in two years from 2001 to 2003.

This program has since remained the best PMTCT program in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr Ngongo is a seasoned manager and strategic thinker with solid experience in health system strengthening for RMNCAH, Infectious Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases.
